Level 1 Applied Science

Course Description

This subject is a general science course for students who are not taking other science subjects. It occurs at both level 2 and level 3 and counts towards university entrance as a separate subject. All standards are internally assessed and so it does not provide the opportunity for subject endorsement at either level 2 or 3. Students take this course when they want to keep doing a science subject but do not want to specialise in a particular area of science. There is some overlap with other science subjects in levels 2 and 3 and so students should not be doing this course and any other science subject.

This course is designed for students who are aiming to gain literacy and numeracy at level 1 and who benefit best from a course with limited credits which are internally assessed. Students enrolling in this course are not eligible to enrol in 12BIO, 12 CHE, 12PHY or 12ESS in 2014. Students may continue on into 12SCA, Applied Science.

Note: As this course is internally assessed, it is not eligible for subject endorsement.

• investigate the properties and uses of metals in cars
• investigate how different materials keep us warm
• understand how microorganisms are used to produce food and prevent food spoilage
