Recommended Prior LearningPrior learning at Level 1 Te Reo Māori is recommended for entry to level 2 or at the discretion of the Head of Faculty.
To be successful in the course, students will be required to focus on the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
This course offers intermediate stage Māori language oral, listening, reading and written, ideally suited for students who have already studied and completed Māori at year 11. It is the study of language in greater depth with an emphasis on oral and written Māori. The learning is focussed around pōhiri, students dreams and aspirations for the years to come and giving their thoughts on te reo Māori in the classroom.
There will be summative and formative assessments throughout the year.
Topics covered in the course include - Pōhiri, dreams and aspirations, arguments for and against te reo Māori being compulsory in the classroom, whakataukī, waiata and mōteatea
Term 1
Pōhiri: Karanga, whaikōrero, tikanga
New sentence structures will be introduced along with karakia, waiata, mōteatea and vocabulary throughout the year.
Term 2
Ōku wawata (Dream and aspirations): Group and peer work to build conversational skills.
Term 3
Tautohetohe (Debate): Crafting an opinion piece and participating in a debate.
Term 4
Pānui: Reading comprehension skills are the main focus for term 4 in preparation for the external assessments.
Learning te reo Māori in Aotearoa supports in fostering a deeper cultural connection with our indigenous heritage. It promotes inclusivity by helping to preserve and revitalize a unique language, while contributing to New Zealand’s bicultural identity. Proficiency in te reo Māori opens up career opportunities and supports Māori language revitalization efforts. Ultimately, learning te reo Māori is a powerful way to connect with Aotearoa's rich cultural landscape and participate in shaping a more inclusive society.
