Throughout the year, students will explore New Zealand’s unique appeal as a tourist destination while building a strong understanding of both domestic and international tourism. They will develop global geographic knowledge, examine key tourist markets and destinations, and investigate what attracts visitors worldwide. Students will also analyse the environmental, social, and cultural impacts of tourism, evaluating its effects on people and places. Additionally, they will explore the characteristics of different tourist types, the roles and expectations within the tourism industry, and reflect on their own strengths and interests in relation to potential tourism careers.
Term 1
This term, students will explore both inbound and domestic tourism in Aotearoa New Zealand, examining what makes New Zealand a unique and attractive tourist destination. They will also develop their global geographic knowledge by locating key regions, countries, and gateway cities. Students will learn to identify major tourism markets and destinations worldwide, and describe the key attractions, activities, and events that draw tourists to these places.
Term 2
This term, students will learn to describe and compare the environmental, social, and cultural impacts of tourism. They will explore how tourism affects natural environments and communities, and evaluate both the positive and negative consequences in different contexts.
Term 3
This term, students will learn about the characteristics and needs of different types of tourists, with a focus on international visitors to New Zealand. They will also explore various roles within the tourism industry, including the skills, knowledge, personal attributes, and presentation standards required. Students will evaluate their own strengths and interests in relation to potential tourism careers.
Term 4
This term, students will focus on completing all outstanding work to consolidate their learning and ensure all assessment requirements are met.
