Course Description

Over the year, students will build a strong foundation in travel and tourism, focusing on New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. They will learn to identify key destinations, attractions, transport options, and travel information relevant to each region. Students will also explore how the New Zealand travel industry works with suppliers to book travel products. Through this, they will develop practical skills in presenting travel information to customers. For those who complete the core standards, an extension unit will deepen their knowledge of global travel geography, including IATA regions, time zones, and seasons, and how these affect international travel.


Course Overview

Term 1
This term, students will learn to identify and describe New Zealand’s geographical location and key tourist destinations on a map. They will explore major attractions, activities, and events across the country, as well as transport options including air travel and ground services. Students will also develop skills to provide useful travel information for visitors to New Zealand.

Term 2
This term, students will learn about the key suppliers used by the New Zealand travel industry to book travel products in Australia. They will develop the skills to present information to customers about transport options, activities, attractions, and events in Australia, as well as provide essential travel information for visitors travelling to, from, and within Australia.

Term 3
This term, students will learn about the suppliers used by the New Zealand travel industry to book travel products in Pacific Island countries. They will gain skills in presenting information to customers about transport, attractions, activities, and events, as well as providing essential travel information for visitors travelling to, from, and within the Pacific Islands.

Term 4
This term, students will focus on completing all outstanding work to consolidate their learning and ensure all assessment requirements are met. For students who have met the requirements of the previous standards, this extension unit will focus on advanced world travel geography. Learners will locate IATA Traffic Conference Areas, countries, gateway cities, and key global geographical features. They will also develop an understanding of time zones and seasons and how these impact international travel.
